Dell Inspiron 4000 DVD to TV out mini HowTo As delivered from Dell, the Inspiron 4000 with Windows ME would not display DVD movies to a television. According to the Dell documentation Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> Displays, should include a TV option. This machine did not. The following steps corrected the problem: 1. Bios needs to be at level a03 hold down the F2 key while booing to get the BIOS screen. The BIOS version is displayed in the upper right hand corner of page one. The BIOS upgrade is here: http://ftp1.euro.dell.com/bios/a03.exe Run the executable from inside of Windows to install the upgrade file to a diskette which is bootable. The diskette will automatically run the BIOS upgrade on boot. (note: this machine was first upgraded to BIOS level a02 then a03) 2. Uninstall the InterVideo Win DVD software: use Control Panel->Add Remove software 3. Get and install the latest ATI video driver: http://ftp1.euro.dell.com/video/ZVIDEO04.exe Switching video modes to standard VGA before installing the new drivers is prudent. There should now be a TV option in the Display Control Panel. 4. Reinstall the InterVideo Win DVD software from the CD. 5. Update the Control Panel -> System ->Device Manager->Monitors tab There should be two monitors listed. The first one should be default monitor. The second one should be Generic Television. To change, highlight the second default monitor and click properties. Click the driver tab->update driver-> specify location->Display list of all drivers->show all hardware. Select standard monitor types from the left pane and Generic Television from the right pane. That should do it. Connect the cable from the laptop to the television. Make sure that the television is set to "video source" not cable or antenna.
