Fig. 2. Border
Patrol Agent on line watch at the new border fence south of San Diego.
Less than a mile to the west of the location shown in Fig. 2 a Border
Patrol officer was recently shot and injured by a sniper shooting from
the Mexican side of the border. Sniping incidents have followed the
shooting of the officer, but, fortunately, there have been no further injuries
of officers reported. Intelligence reports indicate that the drug
and alien smuggling operations in Mexico are hoping to intimidate Border
Patrol officers holding the line so that smuggling operations can resume
with minimal interference.
What
are these signs?
Unless you live near the border in Southern California or have visited
Southern California, you probably haven't seen much of this road sign.
It is a sign to caution drivers that there may be unexpected flocks of
illegal aliens dashing across the road at any time. After the signs
proved ineffective, the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS)
erected high fences down the median strips of problem highways. The
fences, along with the current strict border enforcement policies have
all but eliminated the deadly mad dashes across our highways, but the signs
remain.
