Rancho Santa Fe History In 1906, the Santa Fe Land Improvement Company purchased over 8,000 acres of land for the cultivation of eucalyptus for railroad ties. Although eucalyptus wood was used for railroad ties or "sleepers" in Australia, it soon became apparent that this same wood grown in the U.S. was not suitable for this purpose. It was found that the wood was too brittle, and it was said that the spikes would actually "pop out" after a period of time. The Company therefore decided to develop the land for horticultural and residential use. San Diego architect, Lilian Rice was contracted to design and develop a unique architectural style that enhanced the qualities of the surrounding landscape. Construction on the first building in the Village, presently "The Inn," began in November, 1922. |
