2. Thomas2 Whitaker (Mark1) was b. 13 June 1712 in Baltimore Co., Md, and d. abt 1787 in Surrey Co., N C. He m. Mary_____.

No record of Thomas and Mary's marriage has been found. Speculation is that Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Priscilla Wilson of Prince George Co., Md. In his will, Thomas Wilson instructs wife to "make over to Thomas Whitaker 100 A 'Prevention'". Daughters Priscilla and Mary were left only personal estate, suggesting they were still unmarried at the time of his death. The will was dated 30 Mar 1744 and recorded 1 May 1744.

No evidence of marriage between Mark and Martha has been found. Speculation is Martha may have been a Harvey. Mark's father and John Harvey owned adjoining property on Double Creek, Surry Co., NC. It was also thought that Mark and Martha named one of their sons Harvey. But according to the order book of Russell Co. Court, Richard B. Long was appointed guardian of Mark R. Whitaker's dependent children in 1835 and their names were Harvey, William and Polly. I have found no evidence of a child named Harvey born to Mark, Sr and Patsy.

In deeds of Russell Co., Va, 1853-54 which transferred property from heirs of Mark Whitaker Sr., to George Gose, Francis, Johnson, James O., Matilda, Susan, Mary and William P. were named. Mark's son, Mark R. Whitaker had died in 1833 leaving 3 children, Harvey, Polly and William P. It was specified that the property was left to eight heirs. The deeds account for 7 of the eight heirs. Some sources say another daughter was Nancy Whitaker who m. William Christian and lived in Montgomery Il. I haven't been able to verify that, yet. It is possible that Nancy transferred her share to William, as they both were in Montgomery Co., Il., and William was transferring 2 shares.

The children above were listed on the 1850 census except for Susannah. She was shown as the wife of Johnson "Bud" Adams on the 1860 census. Also listed in this household were Madison Kilgore, age 5; Martha Kilgore, age 3; Nancy Whitaker, age 21; and Emaline Whitaker, age 18 and Amanda, age 1. On the 1840 census two daughters were listed-one born between 1830-1835 (Susannah) and one between 1825-1830 (Margaret). Amanda was living with Mark and Nancy in the 1860 census, so she was probably their daughter. Evaline(sic) was the wife of Thomas on the 1860 census.
